Connecting with friends and family seems to be flavour of the day, with two internet giants, Facebook and Google, on Thursday unleashing their respective technologies that enable users to sign in to third party websites, by using their Google and Facebook account credentials.

Google Inc. has unleashed, within hours of Facebook announced its “Connect”, its much-awaited “Google Friend Connect” technology that allows its users to sign in to other partnering websites, using their Google, AIM, OpenID, or Yahoo accounts.

Primarily designed with open-source code, including OAuth, OpenSocial, and OpenID, Friend Connect offers much wider web to its users for social sharing across the web.

In order to allow its subscribers to use Google’s Friend Connect widget, partner website owners require to provide some information to Google, followed by pasting the code for needed OpenSocial gadgets into their web pages.

When compared against Facebook’s Connect, which primarily uses proprietary codes and based on setting-up relationships between Facebook and partnering websites, Google’s system is dubbed as more open.

Upholding the worth of its enhanced social networking technology, the search giant said in its blog posts, “Friend Connect makes it easy for anyone to sign in to a website, share a little bit about themselves through a personal profile, discover other people with similar interests, invite their contacts, and interact with friends”.
