Traditional dial up internet connections are gradually being phased out from UK, with as many as 19 out of 20 web users in UK preferring fast and cost effective broadband connections, latest official statistics revealed.
According to the September figures released by Office for National Statistics (ONS), as “Internet Connectivity September 2008”, the broadband connections have increased from 92.8 percent registered in June 2008, to 94.1 percent in the month of September.
While the broadband connections are showing a rise of 7.6 percent on year-on-year basis, with one percent increase in the quarter for June to September, dial-up connections declined by 18.6 percent in the same quarter, with a downfall of 50 percent on yearly basis.
In addition, the index for all connections dipped by 0.4 percent, owing to significant fall in dial-up internet connections.
Commenting on the soaring popularity of broadband connections, ONS said in a statement, “The market share of broadband connections has been increasing since the index began in 2001, reflecting its continuing popularity, widespread availability and increasingly competitive connection packages”.
The statistics further disclosed that a rising proportion of nearly 57 percent broadband connections in the month of September had internet speeds greater than 2Mbps, registering a rise of 2 percent over the figures of June.
