Microblogging Service Twitter Cuts UK SMS In Bid To Save Money

Microblogging Service Twitter Cuts UK SMS In Bid To Save Money

Twitter has announced that UK users of the service will be no longer able to receive any updates by SMS; they were previously allowed up to a maximum of 1000 texts per month.

In a blog post on Twitter's blog, Biz Stone, the microblogging site's co-founder, says that the price of sending emails was too much for a web 2.0 company that has yet to turn a profit after raising USD 20 million in venture capital.

He argued that "Even with a limit of 250 messages received per week, it could cost Twitter about $1,000 per user, per year to send SMS outside of Canada, India, or the US. It makes more sense for us to establish fair billing arrangements with mobile operators than it does to pass these high fees on to our users."

Stone has also vowed to make Twitter more accessible by setting up local SMS numbers in more European countries.

UK Users will still be able to access their Twitter updates via email and other countries like India, Canada and the US won't be affected.
