Monks Get 30mbps Wireless Broadband access For Online Shop

They may be isolated physically but a small community of 15 monks on the isle of Caldey, off the coast of Pembrokeshire, have installed a 30mbps wireless internet access in order to get their small online shop to the next level.

The Cistercian brothers, who have been on the island for more than 14 centuries,  sell sweets and perfume (ed : a rather strange combination of goods) to bring in much needed revenue for their community's survival.

Their practical novel approach to mixing online shopping and catechetic life meant that their small online venture doubled in size over the last five years.

The move, from dial-up to broadband, has been made possible with the help of TFL Group, which uses a fixed base on the Welsh mainland.

"Patience is one of the characteristics of monastic life, but even the patience of the Brothers was tested by our slow internet," remarked Cistercian monk Father Daniel adding, "Broadband access has made a huge difference to our internet usage".
